Roads in India
India has the second largest road network in the world comprising 3.3 million kms, which carries about 61% of the freight and 85% of the passenger traffic. India’s National Highways, with a total length of 65,569 kms, serve as the arterial network across the country and carries 40% of the road traffic. Private participation is allowed in the sector through construction contracts and on the Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis.
The Department of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Government of India is the nodal department administering the Road sector. The National Highways Authority of India is the implementing agency for National Highways programmes. 100% FDI under the automatic route is permitted for projects for construction and maintenance of roads, highways, vehicular bridges, toll roads etc.
